SQUARE DANCING

The following information refers to dancing arrangements for the 2011 Festival.
We will update this webpage when 2012 arrangements are confirmed

Unlike CCMF10, Square Dancing workshops. presentations and public invitationals will NOT be held at the 2011 Festival. We plan to have workshops and presentations coordinated by the ACT Square Dancing Association Inc in future years as instructors and space permit.

Square Dancing is a very "country" pastime, originating during the California Gold Rush. It was typically done at barn raisings, community gatherings, birthdays, and other celebrations and parties. With the advent of popular country music on radio, Square Dancing sprung up in 1939 and spread across the USA and Canada peaking in the mid 1950s in North America, Australia, New Zealand and northern Europe.

Square Dancing consists of a host who calls out the movements, and several pairs of people, normally a man and a woman, called "couples." Some movements are promenade, allemandy left, circle left/right, dosado and right/left grand family. Square dancing is officially the National Dance of the United States.
